Walk Number 11               The Frome River

Map 9           1.5 miles                 1 hour

Vaggs Hill - Langham Farm - Tellisford Packhorse Bridge -    Frome Riverside - Pomeroy Estate.

Commentary: A gentle walk (muddy in winter) along the River Frome past an ancient packhorse bridge.

1.

Drive to Vaggs Hill and park on the left after passing the Langham Farm sign.

2.               Follow the bridle way finger post along the track towards Langham
Farm, but at the bend follow the hedge on the right down to the second
gateway.

3.               Descend steeply, turn right past the copse and continue walking until
you cross the stile where the river meets the thicket.   Stop here and
Hsten for the weir which is beyond the second world war pill box on
your left.

4.               Follow the course of the river and climb over the next stile to join a
bridle way.  To your right is Vaggs Hill Farm House.   (If you walk up
and look at it carefully you will spot the date it was built).  The walk,
however, continues downhill to the packhorse bridge and then right
along the river on the Vaggs Hill Farm House/Southwick side of the
river.   (You could walk across the bridge into Somerset and up the
steps to visit Tellisford Church and then retrace your steps before
continuing the walk).

5.               Where the riverside walk ends at a stile, turn right to climb up the field
for about 20 metres and through the next stile.   You are now in the
Parish of Wingfield. Ascend the (muddy in winter) hilly track until you
reach the next stile on your right leading into a field. Keep on the right
and climb over the stile next to a field gate.

6.               From here, looking clockwise, you can see Westwood Church and
Wingfield Church.   Follow the edge of the field and continue in a
straight line until a break in the hedge. (Vaggs Hill Farm House can be
seen down on the right). At this point take a diagonal line to a stile in
the left-hand corner of the next field.  Climb the stile to the road and
your car.
